A simmering dispute over a shared driveway in Queens, New York, tragically ended the life of 10-year-old Justin Wallace on the evening of June 5, 2021. The young boy, a fifth-grader at Challenge Charter School, was at a family barbecue at his aunt's home on Beach 45th Street in Edgemere. As the family was getting ready to leave, gunfire erupted, striking Justin in the torso and his 29-year-old uncle in the shoulder and hand. Justin was rushed to St.
John's Episcopal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just days before his 11th birthday and elementary school graduation. His uncle survived the attack.
The shooting, which sent shockwaves through the community, was allegedly orchestrated by 29-year-old Ashram Lochan, who was angry over the ongoing parking dispute. Police believe Lochan commanded his cousin, 29-year-old Jovan Young, to carry out the shooting. Surveillance video captured the gunman pulling up in a sedan, walking up to the house, and firing multiple shots into the residence before fleeing. The bullets tore through the front screen door, finding their victims inside.
In the days following the senseless act of violence, the New York City community mourned the loss of the intelligent and charming boy who loved math and cars. The investigation quickly led to Jovan Young, who turned himself in to the 101st Precinct on June 8, 2021. He was subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. A grand jury later indicted Young on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
More than two years after the fatal shooting, on July 27, 2023, police arrested Ashram Lochan, identifying him as the alleged mastermind behind the tragic event. He was charged with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The arrests brought a renewed sense of hope for justice for Justin Wallace and his grieving family.
