The tragic chain of events began when Marrinan's friend, a retired
corrections officer, sought his help in dealing with a man who was reportedly harassing his elderly father. When Marrinan and his friend intervened, a physical altercation ensued with the man, identified as 33-year-old Michael Soto. During the struggle, the retired corrections officer's gun discharged. The single bullet struck Soto in the arm before fatally striking Marrinan in the chest. Despite desperate attempts to save him, including his wife rushing to his side, Marrinan was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Michael Soto was arrested and subsequently charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and assault.
