In the early hours of a Sunday in August 2021, the life of 26-year-old Kelvin Mussonguela was tragically cut short on a street corner in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Mussonguela, a male of South African and Angolan descent, was found shot at the intersection of Utica Avenue and Sterling Place, less than a block from his home. The shooting occurred on August 1, 2021.
Emergency services rushed him to Kings County Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Mussonguela's death quickly led police to a suspect. Casey Bryan, a 30-year-old man, was identified as the alleged perpetrator. Police were able to locate Bryan after a license plate reader scanned his vehicle. Sources within the police department suggested that the motive for the shooting may have been jealousy, as it was believed that Bryan thought Mussonguela had made advances towards his girlfriend.
Following the investigation, Casey Bryan was arrested and subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of Kelvin Mussonguela. The charges brought a measure of progress for a community shaken by the senseless violence that had claimed a young life just steps from his own front door.
