On a summer evening in Harlem, tragedy struck a neighborhood corner. On July 26, 2021, at approximately 9:47 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the air near West 141st Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered 19-year-old Matthew Sumpter with a fatal gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency services rushed the young man to a nearby Harlem hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
