In the late hours of a Saturday in the Bronx, a burst of violence shattered the night, leaving a man dead and a community in search of answers. On December 11, 2021, at approximately 10:59 p.m., 37-year-old John Salgado, a male resident of Gunther Avenue, was shot multiple times in front of 1385 Washington Ave. in the Claremont section of the Bronx.
Responding to a 911 call, police officers from the 42nd Precinct and NYPD PSA 7 discovered Salgado with gunshot wounds to his face, chest, and both legs. Emergency medical services rushed him to BronxCare Health System, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The initial investigation suggested that an unknown individual had approached Salgado, opened fire, and then fled the scene. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear. For several days, no arrests were made as police continued to investigate the homicide. The quiet in the case was broken on Thursday, December 16, 2021, when the NYPD announced the first arrest in connection with Salgado's murder.
Nelson Rivera, a 20-year-old man from Queens, was taken into custody and charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation, however, was far from over. In the following months, two more suspects were identified and apprehended. In March 2022, the NYPD arrested two Bronx men, 25-year-old Ismael Melendez and 20-year-old Tyjon Mitchell. Melendez was charged with murder, manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, while Mitchell was charged with murder. The arrests brought a measure of progress in the case, though the judicial process would still need to unfold to determine the guilt or innocence of the accused.
