A promising venture to purchase two motorcycles, found through an online advertisement, turned into a fatal encounter for 20-year-old Jefferson Jimenez Hernandez on May 18, 2022, in the Bronx, New York. The young man, a Hispanic resident of Spring Valley who had moved to the United States from Guatemala nearly a decade prior, was remembered by his family as a hardworking and respectful individual with a passion for art.
On that Wednesday afternoon, Hernandez, accompanied by three
friends, drove to the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx, at the intersection of East 144th Street and Exterior Street. They arrived with a flatbed U-Haul trailer, ready to transport the motorcycles they intended to buy. The transaction, however, was a setup. Four men, riding on two dirt bikes and two motorcycles, ambushed Hernandez and his friends, opening fire. Hernandez was struck multiple times in the head. His friends were not injured in the attack.
Emergency services rushed Hernandez to Lincoln Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. In the aftermath, investigators found an unloaded firearm in Hernandez’s vehicle, though its connection to the incident remained unclear. The senseless act of violence left his family, particularly his mother Miriam Jimenez, devastated as they sought justice for their son.
The investigation into the murder led to the arrests of three men. The first to be apprehended was 23-year-old Manuel Reyes, who was taken into custody on May 22, 2022. He was subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Later, authorities arrested two more suspects, 32-year-old Joan Vasquez and 25-year-old Leonardo Hernandez. Both men face the same charges of murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. All three men were awaiting further legal proceedings.
