In the early morning hours of December 16, 2021, the quiet life of Tamer Shaarawy, a 38-year-old male resident of Staten Island, New York, was violently cut short. First responders were called to his home shortly after 1:30 a.m. where they discovered Shaarawy with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The incident, which marked the first homicide in the 123rd Precinct since 2019, was investigated as a home invasion robbery. Shaarawy was a father to two young children and known in his community as a weight-lifting enthusiast who often shared videos of his workouts.
The investigation into the death of Tamer Shaarawy led to the eventual arrest of four individuals. Initially, police suspected two men were involved, but the investigation later identified a woman as the alleged orchestrator of the fatal home invasion. In January 2022, authorities arrested 35-year-old Kaitlyn Reuter and 41-year-old Nathaniel Morton, charging them with murder and robbery. Prosecutors have described Reuter as the 'mastermind' behind the plan to kill Shaarawy. A third suspect, 20-year-old Emmanuel Sullivan, was taken into custody ten days after Reuter and Morton. The fourth suspect, 24-year-old Deandre McClellan, was apprehended in Alabama in June 2022 and extradited to New York to face charges of murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a loaded firearm.
In a strange turn of events, just days after Shaarawy's death, Kaitlyn Reuter reportedly posted a social media tribute to him, featuring a video of them working out together. The investigation also saw a development in the case of one of the suspects. Emmanuel Sullivan was found unresponsive in his cell on Rikers Island on May 28, 2022, and was later pronounced dead. The case has seen legal progress, with a guilty verdict being returned in November 2024 for one of the participants in the home invasion that led to Tamer Shaarawy's death.
