Fred Weiss, a Staten Island developer and former newspaper publisher, was murdered on September 11, 1989. His body was discovered outside his girlfriend's condo in Staten Island. Weiss was killed by the DeCavalcante crime family, a notorious New Jersey-based mob organization.
