On the morning of September 11, 1989, Fred Weiss, a Staten Island real estate developer and sanitation magnate, was fatally shot as he was leaving his girlfriend's apartment. Two men approached him as he was getting into his vehicle and shot him multiple times in the head and once in the arm. The brazen execution, which left bullet holes in his Jeep, was the culmination of fears within the highest echelons of organized crime that Weiss was cooperating with federal authorities.
