On a tragic Saturday afternoon, May 14, 2022, Geraldine Talley, a 62-year-old Black woman, was shopping at the Tops Friendly Markets on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo, New York. Known to her loved ones as 'Gerri,' she was a beloved mother and grandmother with a gentle and loving nature that brought her family together. That day, what began as a routine trip to the grocery store with her fiancé, Gregory Allen, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror.
While they were separated in the store, a gunman opened fire, and in the chaos, Geraldine was tragically killed.
Geraldine was one of ten people, all of them Black, who lost their lives in a racially motivated mass shooting. The perpetrator, Payton Gendron, an 18-year-old white supremacist, had traveled from his hometown hours away with the specific intent of targeting Black people. He was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and livestreamed the attack. The devastating event sent shockwaves through the Buffalo community and the nation, leaving families and an entire community heartbroken.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Payton Gendron was arrested at the scene. The investigation that followed revealed a manifesto he had written, detailing his racist and white supremacist ideology. Gendron was charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder, domestic terrorism, and hate crimes. On November 28, 2022, he pleaded guilty to all state charges. This led to his sentencing on February 15, 2023, where he received multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole. Federal charges against Gendron are still pending. The community continues to mourn the loss of Geraldine Talley and the other victims, remembering them as vibrant individuals whose lives were senselessly cut short by an act of hate.
