On March 1, 2020, a bright and promising life was senselessly cut short when 23-year-old Hannah Elizabeth Morse was killed while working at a 7-Eleven on French Road in Cheektowaga, a suburb of Buffalo, New York. Morse, a college student with aspirations of becoming a video editor, was remembered for her deep love for children and as a person who was well-loved by all who knew her.
Her dream-filled life was tragically ended in an act of random violence.
That Sunday morning, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Travis J. Zukic, then 29 years old, entered the convenience store armed with a shotgun. In a chilling sequence of events, Zukic confronted Morse and her two female co-workers. After inquiring about their ages, he forced the three women into a back room of the store. It was there that Zukic fatally shot Hannah Morse. Her two colleagues were left as horrified witnesses to the gruesome act. The investigation later revealed that the shooting was a random attack, as Zukic had no known connection to Morse or the other employees.
The violence did not end with Morse's death. A few minutes after the shooting, as a Cheektowaga police officer entered the 7-Eleven to investigate the incident, Zukic fired a shot at the officer. Fortunately, the officer was not injured, and Zukic was taken into custody at the scene.
In the wake of the tragedy, the legal process moved forward. On August 25, 2021, Travis Zukic pleaded guilty to one count of Murder in the Second Degree and one count of Attempted Murder in the First Degree. By pleading guilty, he avoided a trial where he could have faced a sentence of 65 years to life in prison. On October 6, 2021, Zukic was sentenced to an indeterminate sentence of 25 years to life in prison, bringing a measure of justice for the senseless murder of Hannah Morse.
