In the crisp autumn air of October 9, 2014, the life of 17-year-old Shmerea Nailor, a female African-American student at Burgard High School in Buffalo, New York, was tragically cut short. Around 10:30 p.m., in the Riverside neighborhood at the intersection of Riverside Avenue and Ontario Street, Nailor was fatally shot. She was found near her bicycle on the sidewalk in front of St. Mark's & All Saints' Episcopal Church.
