On the evening of June 29, 2022, a 20-year-old woman named Azsia Johnson was pushing her three-month-old infant in a stroller on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As she walked near the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 95th Street, a figure approached her from behind, dressed in black and wearing a ski mask. This individual fired a single, fatal shot at point-blank range, striking Johnson in the head before fleeing the scene on foot.
First responders rushed Johnson to Metropolitan Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries a short time later. Her baby was found unharmed in the stroller.
The investigation into Johnson's death quickly focused on her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child, 22-year-old Isaac Argro. Johnson had reportedly sent text messages to a family member indicating she was meeting Argro that evening to 'work things out.' Her mother later revealed that her daughter had been a victim of domestic violence and had previously reported an incident to the police in which Argro allegedly pushed her while she was pregnant. Johnson had been living in a domestic violence shelter at the time of her death.
Two days after the shooting, on July 1, 2022, Isaac Argro was arrested in the Bronx by members of the NYPD Regional Task Force. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors described the killing as a 'premeditated act of fatal domestic violence,' stating that Argro had lured Johnson to the location under the pretense of giving her items for their daughter, but arrived without them. Following the shooting, Argro allegedly called Johnson's family to inquire about the whereabouts of his daughter and threatened another family member. He was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Argro pleaded not guilty to the charges and was held without bail.
