A sense of celebration was in the air on the Fourth of July in Syracuse, New York, but the holiday atmosphere was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of a young soldier. Malik Sharif Shipman, a 19-year-old male, was in the city to enjoy an Independence Day party. Just before midnight, the festivities in a neighborhood near Onondaga Park were cut short by the sound of gunfire. When the chaos subsided, Shipman was found to have been shot.
