In the summer of 2022, tragedy once again struck the Myers family of Brooklyn. Zamel Myers, a 44-year-old male, was fatally shot on July 10th inside a New York City Housing Authority apartment building in the Canarsie neighborhood. The incident unfolded in the hallway of the Breukelen Houses, where Myers resided. He was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 8:50 a.m.
His death was a devastating blow to his family, who were still mourning the loss of his brother, Robert Myers, to gun violence two years prior.
Zamel was remembered by his grieving family as a protector and a devoted father to his three children. His mother, Delores Myers, expressed immense sorrow and frustration over the violent death of a second son. Loved ones gathered outside his apartment, leaving candles as a memorial to a man they described as a respected and hardworking family man. The community was left shaken by the recurring violence that had claimed the lives of two brothers.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation led by the New York Police Department identified a suspect in the case. Leo Lewis, a 45-year-old man, was located and apprehended in Greensboro, North Carolina, by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force. Lewis was extradited back to Brooklyn to face legal proceedings. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. While an arrest was made, the motive for the shooting was not immediately made public by the authorities.
