In the summer of 2022, a violent altercation outside a bar on Lyell Avenue in Rochester, New York, tragically cut short the life of 36-year-old Derek Taylor. On the morning of July 24th, police responded to the scene to find Taylor with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was quickly transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the city's 44th homicide of the year led police to identify a suspect in the shooting.
Less than two weeks later, on August 5th, authorities announced the arrest of 32-year-old Joseph Scott. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Taylor's death.
Prosecutors laid out a narrative suggesting that a fight between Scott and Taylor outside the Lyell Avenue bar escalated dramatically. It was alleged that Scott chased Taylor to the intersection of Lyell Avenue and Whitney Street, where he then shot him in the chest. The case proceeded to trial, where the evidence and testimony were presented before a jury.
In a turn of events, Joseph Scott was acquitted of the second-degree murder charge in April 2024. While cleared of murder, he was not without culpability in the eyes of the law. Scott was convicted on weapons charges related to the incident and was subsequently sentenced to serve 10 years in prison in May 2024.
