In the summer of 2022, a 36-year-old man, Anthony Edwards, a father of four, was fatally shot in Queens, New York. On the morning of July 31st, Edwards was sitting in his car at the intersection of Beach 38th Street and Norton Avenue in Edgemere when a gunman opened fire, striking him in the head. Emergency services responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.
The assailant fled the area in a white Jeep following the shooting.
The investigation into the murder of Anthony Edwards was conducted by detectives from the 101st Precinct Detective Squad and the Queens South Homicide Squad. Their efforts led to the apprehension of a suspect, Jamal Brown, 27, of Arverne. Brown was arrested in Harlem on September 22, 2022. Following his arrest, a Queens County grand jury indicted him on charges of murder in the second degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. He was arraigned on October 17, 2022, before Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise. If convicted of the charges, Brown faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence of up to 25 years to life.
Less than a year prior, another man named Anthony Edwards, aged 31, was also tragically killed in a shooting in Queens. On the night of September 24, 2021, this Anthony Edwards, a father of six, was standing with a friend outside the Astoria Houses, where he lived, when a gunman attacked them. Edwards was shot multiple times in the face and died at the hospital. His friend was also shot but survived. In the immediate aftermath, no arrests were made, and the gunman remained at large. One report later mentioned that a man named Jamal Brown had been indicted by a Queens County grand jury for this killing as well, though details were less specific than in the 2022 case. The community was left to mourn another senseless act of violence.
