On a Tuesday afternoon in Queens, New York, a dispute over a drug debt escalated into a fatal encounter for 30-year-old Christopher Cognata. On November 22, 2016, Cognata went to an apartment on 151st Avenue in Howard Beach to confront Joseph Amatuccio about money owed from a narcotics deal. Cognata arrived at approximately 4:30 p.m. and was initially told by Amatuccio's girlfriend that he was not home. After she left to walk her dog and returned with a friend, Cognata was still waiting and was eventually let into the residence.
Once inside, a violent struggle broke out between Cognata and Amatuccio in a bedroom. The altercation culminated in gunfire, with Cognata suffering mortal wounds to his neck, chest, and arm. Emergency services were called, and he was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, but he was pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m. The New York Police Department quickly identified Amatuccio as the suspect and found him hiding in a nearby apartment.
Investigators arrested Joseph Amatuccio and charged him with second-degree murder and weapons possession. Police also recovered a Springfield Arms. 45-caliber handgun, which was believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. Both men were known to law enforcement, with Cognata having a history of arrests for robbery and gun possession, and Amatuccio having three prior arrests. In the subsequent legal proceedings, Amatuccio was acquitted of the second-degree murder charge. However, he was found guilty of weapons possession and in 2019, was sentenced to a term of seven to nine years in state prison. An appeal of his conviction was later denied.
