In the fall of 2022, a deep sense of dread followed 30-year-old Keaira Hudson. A mother of three from Buffalo, New York, she had taken to wearing a bulletproof vest, a chilling precaution against a danger she felt was imminent. She confided in her mother that her estranged husband, Adam Bennefield, was going to kill her. Her fear was tragically realized on the morning of October 5, 2022.
As she sat in her car with her three children, preparing to take them to school, a pickup truck intentionally crashed into her vehicle at the intersection of Richlawn and Shawnee Avenues.
The driver of the truck was Adam Bennefield. After the collision, he exited his vehicle armed with a shotgun, approached his estranged wife's car, and fatally shot her. The entire horrific event unfolded in front of her children, who were in the vehicle with her. In the days leading up to her death, Hudson had desperately sought help. She had posted a video on social media showing a previous brutal assault by Bennefield with the caption, 'This is what this man does to me but I'm always treated like I'm the abuser.' Just a day before the murder, on October 4th, Bennefield had been arrested for a violent domestic incident against Hudson. Despite this, he was released from custody the same day, a decision that left Hudson feeling unprotected and in grave danger. An order of protection that was in place proved to be ineffective.
Following the murder, Adam Bennefield fled the scene, sparking a week-long manhunt. He was eventually captured and arrested. During the subsequent trial, a key and powerful witness was Hudson's own daughter, who was just nine years old at the time of the killing. She tearfully recounted to the court how she saw her stepfather crash into their car and then shoot her mother. The evidence against Bennefield was overwhelming and included surveillance footage and videos from his own phone where he discussed his frustrations.
In November 2024, a jury found Adam Bennefield, then 47, guilty of Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Criminal Contempt for violating the order of protection, and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The jury deliberated for only about an hour before reaching their verdict. He was later sentenced to the maximum penalty of 25 years to life in prison. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Hudson's family filed a lawsuit against the Town of Cheektowaga and its police department, alleging they failed to properly charge Bennefield for the prior domestic violence incident and keep him in custody, which they believe gave him the opportunity to kill her.
