In the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx on the evening of November 30, 2022, 14-year-old Prince Allah Shabazz was walking with his older brother. It was a walk that would tragically be his last. As the brothers made their way down Morris Avenue, two individuals, who had been lying in wait behind a parked car, suddenly emerged and opened fire. Prince was struck multiple times, in the chest, hip, and foot. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A promising young life, remembered by his family as that of a talented artist and a cheerful, thoughtful boy who was one of seven siblings, was abruptly cut short.
The brazen and calculated nature of the attack sent shockwaves through the community. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moments as the masked assailants ambushed the teenager before fleeing the scene. In the wake of the shooting, the New York Police Department launched an intensive investigation. The motive, it was soon suspected, was rooted in a violent feud connected to the world of drill rap. Investigators believed that Prince's older brother, an aspiring drill rapper with ties to a group known as the Grizzly Gang, may have been the intended target. This gang was reportedly embroiled in a bitter rivalry with another group, the Slattery Park gang.
The investigation led to a significant development in late December 2022, when a 17-year-old girl was arrested in connection with Prince's murder. Her identity was not publicly disclosed due to her age. She was apprehended after being treated at a hospital for an unrelated injury, when a detective discovered a social media post she had made mentioning her hospital visit. This piece of information led authorities to her, and she was subsequently taken into custody. When questioned by detectives about her alleged role in the shooting, she requested a lawyer. She was later charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Despite the arrest, the investigation into the death of Prince Allah Shabazz remained active. The police had initially sought two male suspects in connection with the shooting, and even after the teenage girl was charged, authorities indicated that they were still searching for other individuals who may have been involved. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young boy who was described as having an infectious smile and a passion for drawing and creating his own cartoon characters.
