In the winter of 2022, a gathering to film a rap music video in Rochester, New York, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 24-year-old Jahkeem Douglas. On the night of December 13th, a group had assembled at a rented house on Illinois Street to shoot a video honoring a friend who had been a previous victim of murder. The atmosphere of remembrance was shattered when a confrontation erupted in the basement, leading to a shootout between two groups.
Amid the chaos,
approximately 20 to 30 shots were fired, striking five people. Jahkeem Douglas was among those injured and was rushed to Rochester General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later determined that the initial dispute was over a stolen handgun and that Douglas was not the intended target of the violence that unfolded. The shooting set off a series of retaliatory gunfire at various locations across the city.
For nearly two years, the investigation into the mass shooting continued. In December 2024, the Rochester Police Department announced a significant breakthrough with the arrests of two men. Martin Gibson, 33, was identified as the individual who shot Jahkeem Douglas. He was initially charged with second-degree murder, along with various gun and drug crimes. Another man, DeVonte Lippens, was arrested for his alleged role in shooting one of the other victims.
In August 2025, Martin Gibson pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Two months later, in October, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement in the deadly shooting. His co-defendant, Davonte Lippens, pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and was awaiting sentencing. The arrests and subsequent legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to the family of Jahkeem Douglas, who had waited patiently for justice.
