On a cold November day in Rochester, New York, the lives of two young men were violently cut short. On November 11, 2021, the Rochester Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting the sound of gunshots from an apartment building on Chestnut Street. Inside, they made a grim discovery. In a stairwell, officers found 22-year-old Tywan Harper, who had been both shot and beaten to death.
Elsewhere in the building, they located 19-year-old Malakai Smith, who had also been fatally shot. The scene was one of brutal violence, prompting an intensive investigation into the double homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Harper and Smith led authorities to a single suspect. A month after the killings, on December 14, 2021, police arrested 29-year-old Timothy Brown of Greece, a suburb of Rochester. A search of Brown's home uncovered a handgun, further linking him to the crime. Investigators determined that Brown had gone to Tywan Harper's apartment with the intention of killing him, a confrontation that ultimately resulted in the deaths of both Harper and Smith.
Timothy Brown was subsequently charged with a litany of crimes, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The case proceeded to trial, where the prosecution laid out the details of the premeditated and violent nature of the attack. In June 2023, a Monroe County jury found Brown guilty on all counts. The following month, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would be held accountable for the dual tragedy he had inflicted upon the community and the families of his victims.
