Richard Sciascia, a 71-year-old male, was tragically killed on April 7, 2021, in Rochester, New York, during an attempted carjacking. The incident occurred in the morning, at approximately 10:41 a.m., on Buell Road in the Town of Gates.
Sciascia was confronted by two individuals who attempted to steal his vehicle. When he refused to comply with their demands, one of the assailants, armed with a gun, shot him.
Following the shooting, Sciascia was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
A thorough investigation was conducted by the Gates Police Department and the New York State Police, which led to the identification of two teenage suspects. Edgar Tolentino, who was 16 at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The second suspect was identified as 16-year-old Anthony Jacobs.
On June 7, 2022, Edgar Tolentino pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree. Following his guilty plea, it was anticipated that he would be sentenced to 20 years to life in the New York State Department of Corrections. The prosecution of the case was handled by the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, which expressed hope that the conviction would bring some measure of closure to Richard Sciascia's family.
