On a cold December morning in Utica, New York, the life of 20-year-old Tirus Freeman was tragically cut short. In the early hours of December 15, 2022, gunshots rang out on Armory Drive. Freeman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in a private vehicle. The Utica Police Department launched an immediate and thorough investigation into the homicide. Their efforts soon led them to a primary suspect: 28-year-old James Ware, also a resident of Utica. Investigators gathered substantial evidence that connected Ware to the fatal shooting of Freeman. This evidence was presented to an Oneida County Grand Jury, which subsequently handed down an indictment against Ware.
Following the indictment, James Ware was arrested and formally charged with one count of second-degree murder, a Class A-1 felony, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
