In the early morning hours of December 26, 2022, the life of 26-year-old Carlos Gonzalez was tragically cut short in the Crotona neighborhood of the Bronx. Gonzalez, a Black male from the Foxhurst section of the South Bronx, was found unconscious and unresponsive near the intersection of East Tremont and Marmion Avenues at approximately 4:05 a.m. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Emergency medical services rushed him to St.
Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the days that followed, the New York Police Department released surveillance footage of a person of interest, seeking the public's help in their homicide investigation. The investigation led to the arrest of 19-year-old Yerson Arzu from the Mott Haven section of the Bronx on January 5, 2023. Arzu was subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal shooting of Gonzalez.
A vigil held in memory of Carlos Gonzalez on December 28, 2022, near the site of his death, was shattered by further violence. A gunman opened fire into the crowd, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man and injuring three other men. Investigators have been reviewing video footage to determine if the two fatal shootings are connected. The case against Yerson Arzu was scheduled for a court appearance on April 24, 2023, for discovery compliance.
