In the winter of 1982, a brave off-duty police officer lost his life while protecting others. On February 8th, 28-year-old Prince George's County Police Officer Raymond Hubbard was shopping at the Iverson Mall in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, when he witnessed an armed robbery unfolding at a jewelry store. Without hesitation, he drew his own weapon and confronted the suspects, stepping into a situation of immense danger to uphold his duty.
Unbeknownst to Officer Hubbard, the robbers had
accomplices nearby who immediately opened fire on him. He was struck multiple times and fell to the ground. In a final act of brutality, the assailants stood over him and shot him several more times before stealing his service revolver and fleeing the scene. The brazen and violent attack cut short the life of a young officer who had served with the department for two years.
The investigation that followed led to the apprehension of all four suspects involved in the robbery and the murder of Officer Hubbard. The individuals responsible were brought to justice for their heinous crime. Following their trials, all four were convicted for their roles in the officer's death. Three of the suspects received life sentences for the murder, while the fourth was sentenced to 70 years in prison, ensuring they would be held accountable for their actions that day.
