On a tragic September day in 2008, the life of eight-month-old Anthony Maurice Savoy III was cut short by a senseless act of violence in Suitland, Maryland. The infant, affectionately known as 'Tre,' was in a minivan with his parents when the vehicle was riddled with more than a dozen bullets fired from what was believed to be an Uzi submachine gun. The shooting occurred on the evening of Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Anthony was struck and died almost instantly.
His father, Anthony Maurice Savoy II, who was 22 at the time, also sustained gunshot wounds but survived his injuries.
The Prince George's County Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the infant's death. Investigators at the time suspected the shooting may have been in retaliation for another crime that had occurred in the District of Columbia. The brazen and violent nature of the attack sent shockwaves through the community, prompting pleas from law enforcement for public assistance in identifying those responsible for the heinous act.
In a significant development nearly a year later, authorities announced the arrest of a suspect. In July 2009, acting on a tip, police apprehended 21-year-old Karon Clifton Wilson of Northwest Washington. He was taken into custody in Nanjemoy, a town in Charles County, where he was found with friends. Wilson was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of the infant. Following his arrest, he was held at the Prince George's Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro.
