Demetris Johnson, a 27-year-old male acquaintance of Dameron, was identified as the primary suspect in the shooting.
At the time of the incident, Johnson was out on bail and wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet for pending charges, including being an armed habitual criminal and escape. On the day of the shooting, Johnson's mother contacted police, reporting that her son was experiencing a mental episode and was in possession of a firearm. Surveillance footage from the building captured Johnson holding a gun in the lobby before the shooting and later carrying it in a stairwell. He was also seen fleeing the building as police arrived.

Johnson's criminal history includes being charged as an adult in 2011 for a fatal shooting at the age of 16, for which he was later acquitted. As an adult, he accumulated multiple convictions for illegal gun possession and had pending felony charges at the time of Dameron's death. Following his arrest for Dameron's murder, Judge Mary Marubio ordered Johnson to be held without bail, citing the randomness of the act and the difficulty in ensuring public safety.
