Detective Thomas G. Newman, a 37-year-old veteran of the Baltimore City Police Department, tragically lost his life on November 23, 2002. Detective Newman was off duty and leaving Joe’s Tavern on Dundalk Avenue with his girlfriend at approximately 1:50 a.m. when he was ambushed by three men. The assailants approached him and began shooting without any warning, continuing to fire even after he fell to the ground. Detective Newman was struck five times by .32 caliber and 9 mm rounds.
