On an evening in late April of 2007, a tragic event unfolded on Early Oaks Lane in Capitol Heights, Maryland, forever altering the lives of several families. Michael Lamont Stewart, a Black/African American male, was shot and killed on April 29, 2007. An autopsy would later reveal that he had sustained five gunshot wounds, with evidence suggesting that some of the shots were fired at close range.
The cause of his death was determined to be the multiple gunshot wounds he suffered.
In the aftermath of the shooting, another man, Duane Edward Nichols, was also found deceased. The investigation into the homicides led to the indictment of Davon Nathan Markham on June 28, 2007, by a grand jury in Prince George's County. Markham faced a series of charges, including the murders of both Michael Lamont Stewart and Duane Edward Nichols. Further charges included the attempted murder of a third individual, Darryl Fitzgerald, and three counts of using a handgun during the commission of a felony.
The legal proceedings against Markham commenced, with a trial initially scheduled for December 2007. However, the trial was postponed to allow for a competency evaluation for the defendant. During the pre-trial phase, a significant piece of evidence emerged when fingerprints found on the vehicle in which Stewart was shot were identified as belonging to Markham. The trial eventually took place in February 2008, where the jury found Davon Nathan Markham guilty on all charges, including the first-degree murder of Michael Stewart.
