In the late hours of a summer night in Hyattsville, Maryland, a dispute over a car escalated into a tense and ultimately fatal standoff. It began on the evening of August 4, 2008, when police responded to reports of gunshots at an apartment complex on Toledo Terrace. A man had called 911, stating that 29-year-old Brook T. Genet had fired at him. When officers arrived, they were also met with gunfire from Genet, who then barricaded himself inside his ground-floor apartment.
