On February 5, 2022, the life of 29-year-old Remi Jovan Howell was tragically cut short in Prince George's County, Maryland. A mother of three, Howell was a Hyattsville resident known for her vibrant personality and dedication to her family.

The investigation into her death revealed a chilling story of domestic violence. On February 3, 2022, Howell was driven to the parking lot of the Parkview Baptist Church in Landover by her ex-boyfriend, Marcus Mitchell. There, he shot her multiple times and left her at the edge of the parking lot. Her body was discovered two days later. Investigators found that Mitchell had returned to the scene multiple times to ensure she was deceased.

Marcus Mitchell, then 32 years old, was arrested and charged with first and second-degree murder. During a seven-day trial, evidence presented included the murder weapon and clothing worn by Mitchell that matched surveillance footage. After four hours of deliberation, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. He faced a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison.

Further investigation linked the firearm used in Howell's murder to another homicide that occurred less than a week prior. On January 28, 2022, Kenneth Reddix was found with a gunshot wound in Landover and later succumbed to his injuries. This discovery led to additional charges against Mitchell.
