On a winter day in Columbia, Maryland, the life of 25-year-old Tyler Joseph Johnson was tragically cut short. On Saturday, January 25, 2014, Johnson was at his job at the Zumiez skate shop inside The Mall in Columbia when a gunman opened fire. Johnson, along with his co-worker, 21-year-old Brianna Benlolo, were fatally shot. The sudden violence of the act sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends and family to grapple with the senseless loss of a young man known for his kindness
and positive spirit.
Tyler, a resident of Mount Airy, Maryland, was a 2006 graduate of Centennial High School and had been pursuing a culinary arts degree at Howard Community College. He had worked as a chef in several local restaurants before taking a retail position at Zumiez. Beyond his work life, Tyler was deeply committed to helping others who were struggling with addiction, drawing from his own experiences to make a difference. He was an active and passionate volunteer, serving as the youngest board member at the Serenity Center in Columbia, where he was instrumental in implementing new safety standards and inspiring others in their recovery journeys. He also dedicated his time to the Howard County Drug-Free Program, speaking at local high schools and sharing his story of hope and recovery.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the perpetrator was 19-year-old Darion Marcus Aguilar of College Park. After killing Johnson and Benlolo, Aguilar took his own life at the scene. Law enforcement officials reported that Aguilar had no prior criminal record. A journal found belonging to Aguilar expressed a general sense of unhappiness, but a specific motive for the targeted attack on the Zumiez employees remained unclear. While it was determined that Aguilar and Benlolo lived in the same neighborhood, the extent of their relationship, if any, was not definitively established. In the wake of the tragedy, Tyler Johnson's family established a memorial fund in his honor to support causes he was passionate about, including addiction therapy, mental health services, and gun control legislation.
