In a tragic turn of events on a summer afternoon in District Heights, Maryland, a 42-year-old Black female named Zonita Monia Roberts from Georgia lost her life in a violent encounter. On August 15, 2014, police responded to a report of a shooting at a townhouse in the 1500 block of Addison Road South. Upon their arrival at approximately 4:40 p.m., they discovered a grim scene.
Inside the residence, officers found Zonita Roberts and another woman, 43-year-old Angela Lynette Johnson of
Oxon Hill, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. A third individual, 45-year-old Leroy Johnson, Jr. of Oxon Hill, was also found critically injured from a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
The ensuing investigation by the Prince George's County Police led to the conclusion that the incident was a double-murder and suicide. Detectives determined that Leroy Johnson, Jr., who was the recently estranged husband of Angela Johnson, was the sole suspect in the shootings. The investigation suggests that he shot both Zonita Roberts and his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself. A handgun was recovered from the home. As the perpetrator was deceased at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with this case.
