In the winter of 2016, a tragic event unfolded in a Baltimore apartment that abruptly ended the life of Sierra Burley. On the evening of January 12th, three armed men forced their way into the residence located on Haddon Avenue. Inside at the time were 29-year-old Sierra, a Black female, and her roommate, Marvin Jeffers. The intruders' violent entrance marked the beginning of a harrowing ordeal for the two residents.
The men subjected Sierra and her roommate to a brutal assault, kicking
and stomping on them after forcing them to the ground. While two of the assailants ransacked the apartment, one stood guard over the victims. The home invasion took a fatal turn when this individual opened fire. Sierra sustained six gunshot wounds to her head, neck, and chest, with a bullet severing her carotid artery, leading to her death within minutes. Her roommate, despite being shot twice in the head and once in the hand, miraculously survived the attack.
The surviving roommate was able to identify one of the assailants, implicating a man named Trace Hanse as the shooter. This eyewitness testimony proved to be a critical piece of evidence in the ensuing investigation. The survivor managed to drive himself to a hospital, where he received life-saving medical treatment and would later testify in court against the man he named as the gunman.
Trace Hanse was subsequently arrested and faced a jury in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. He was convicted on six charges, including first-degree felony murder and first-degree burglary. For the murder of Sierra Burley, Hanse received a life sentence in prison. This was followed by consecutive sentences for the use of a handgun in a crime of violence against her, the first-degree assault of her roommate, and the use of a gun in that violent act as well.
