In the late evening of August 16, 2021, the life of 48-year-old Sherry Birmingham was tragically cut short in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Officers from the Baltimore Police Department were dispatched to the 2400 block of Washington Boulevard in the Morrell Park neighborhood at approximately 10:08 p.m. following reports of gunfire in the area. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sherry Birmingham on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
She was quickly transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but her injuries proved to be fatal, and she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify a suspect close to home. Sherry Birmingham's own daughter, 31-year-old Toni Arnold, was identified as the individual allegedly responsible for her mother's death. Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Arnold. On September 10, 2021, she was taken into custody and formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of her mother. Arnold is also facing charges of using a firearm in a violent crime, having a handgun on her person, and possession of a firearm with a felony conviction.
Following her arrest, Toni Arnold was held at the Baltimore Central Booking and Inmate Center. In March 2022, during a court proceeding, the prosecution presented a plea offer of a life sentence with all but 40 years suspended, to be followed by five years of probation for the charge of first-degree murder. Arnold, alongside her defense attorney, rejected this plea deal. Consequently, her case was scheduled to proceed to trial.
