In the late evening of September 10, 2023, the life of 22-year-old Savion Cortez Williams, a Black male from Newport News, Virginia, was tragically cut short. First responders were called to the 1100 block of 21st Street following reports of gunfire. Shortly thereafter, a single-vehicle crash was discovered nearby in the 1200 block of the same street. Inside the vehicle was Savion, who was found suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Savion was born on January 9, 2001, in Newport News and was a graduate of Menchville High School. Those who knew him remember a young man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for video games, dancing, and watching comedies. He was also known for his love of car shows and his cherished pet, Miles. A respectful and helpful individual, Savion was always ready to lend a hand to others, particularly elders. His family recalled his fondness for Cheeto puffs and fruit snacks.
The investigation into Savion’s death remains ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made directly in connection with his murder. However, a related case has seen a conviction. Elijah Newell, 21, was found guilty of obstruction of justice on October 9, 2024, for intimidating Savion. It was revealed that Savion had provided information to investigators in a case where Newell was convicted of malicious wounding and attempted robbery. While awaiting sentencing, Newell posted a series of threatening messages on Instagram. These posts included screenshots of police reports with Savion's statements, referred to him as a "snitch," and featured images of Newell in a shooting stance and with firearms. Savion’s mother testified that he had seen these posts and appeared nervous.
Despite the conviction of Elijah Newell for witness intimidation, it is important to note that no one has been charged with the murder of Savion Cortez Williams. The Newport News Police Department continues to seek information from the public regarding his death. In a statement, Savion's family expressed their belief that he was victimized and threatened, which ultimately led to his death. They have made a public plea for anyone with information about the deaths of Savion Cortez Williams and another individual, Mantia Poindexter, to come forward.
