On the evening of September 10, 2023, Newport News Police responded to reports of gunfire near the 1100 block of 21st Street. While canvassing the area, officers were alerted to a single-vehicle crash nearby, in the 1200 block of 21st Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 22-year-old Savion Cortez inside the vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
