Jalisa Walls-Harris, a 22-year-old woman, was tragically killed on March 7, 2016, in a shooting that unfolded in a Cheverly, Maryland apartment. She was not the primary target of the violence but was in the wrong place at the wrong time while visiting her half-sister. The incident, which also claimed the life of her 26-year-old half-sister, Tareeka Jones, was the result of a domestic dispute.
The sisters were found by police suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the apartment on Landover Road and were pronounced dead at the scene. The gunman was identified by authorities as 30-year-old Kevin Tyrice Reynolds, who was reportedly in a romantic relationship with Jones. Reynolds had a history of domestic violence and had been arrested just days prior for assaulting Jones. Despite the previous assault, Jones had assisted in bailing him out of jail shortly before the fatal shooting.
In the immediate aftermath of the killings, law enforcement launched a search for Reynolds. Before he could be apprehended by police, however, Reynolds fled to Hanover County, Virginia, where he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His suicide brought an end to the manhunt, and consequently, there were no arrests, trial, or conviction in the double homicide. The tragic event left the community mourning the loss of two young women, including Jalisa Walls-Harris, a beloved daughter and sister remembered for her vibrant personality and love of singing.
