In the early morning hours of July 27, 2016, the life of 28-year-old Desean Chapman, a male resident of the District-Heights area, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded in the 3200 block of Walters Lane in Forestville, Maryland, where police responded to a call for a shooting at approximately 6:30 a.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Chapman suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Chapman's death quickly identified a suspect, 23-year-old Divonta Gatling of Southeast Washington. It was determined that the two men were acquaintances, and the fatal confrontation stemmed from a domestic dispute. Gatling had children with a woman who was dating Chapman at the time of the shooting. Authorities tracked Gatling to a motel in Salisbury, Maryland, where he was arrested. During the arrest, the handgun used in the homicide was also recovered. Gatling was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and assault and held without bond.
The legal proceedings that followed saw a significant turn of events. In 2017, Divonta Gatling's initial trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. However, as his second trial was set to begin in February 2019, Gatling chose to plead guilty to second-degree murder and the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with all but 20 years suspended. The resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to the family of Desean Chapman, who was remembered as a father to two young children.
