On a Wednesday night in December 2016, Deontay McKnight, a 21-year-old male, was at a gas station on York Road in Baltimore, simply pumping gas into his vehicle. It was around 11:30 p.m. when an individual approached him. An exchange of gunfire erupted between the two, shattering the late-night quiet. The suspect then fled the scene on foot, leaving McKnight with gunshot wounds to his torso.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Deontay, who was born on August 10, 1995, had a twin brother and was a graduate of Forest Park High School. He was employed as a concrete surfacer with M. Luis Construction Company. His family remembered him as someone who was always concerned about the well-being of others and was 'as true as it gets'.
In the days following the shooting, Baltimore Police identified a suspect in the case. An arrest was made, and 27-year-old Devon Brown was taken into custody. Brown faced a number of charges for his alleged involvement in Deontay McKnight's death, including first and second-degree murder, as well as first and second-degree assault.
