In the early hours of a Friday morning in Hagerstown, Maryland, the life of 20-year-old Cameron Thomas Tibbs was tragically cut short. On January 13, 2017, a dispute escalated into fatal violence near the intersection of Liberty Street and North Cannon Avenue, leaving the young man with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to Meritus Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The Hagerstown Police Department swiftly launched an
investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to identify two individuals connected to the incident. Within a short time, authorities located and apprehended 39-year-old James Cornell Evans Sr. of Hagerstown. He was taken into custody at the scene shortly after the shooting occurred. Later that same day, with assistance from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police, and the Boonsboro Police Department, the principal suspect was also located.
The investigation identified 18-year-old Daiquan Yahdir Preston of Philadelphia as the individual who had been in a dispute with Tibbs. Preston was arrested and faced a litany of serious charges, including first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and numerous handgun violations. Evans was charged with being an accessory after the fact to both first and second-degree murder, in addition to handgun offenses. Following their arrests, both men were held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center to await legal proceedings.
