In the early morning hours of December 15, 2020, the life of 21-year-old Kalen Nathaniel Black was tragically cut short in his Hagerstown, Maryland, home. A dispute that had transpired earlier ultimately led to a fatal confrontation. At approximately 4:30 a.m., authorities received a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence on Fair Oaks Court.
Upon their arrival, Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies discovered a grim scene.
Inside the home, they found Kalen Nathaniel Black suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel attempted to save the young man's life, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Lauron Zacherie Hoyle, a 35-year-old man from Montgomery Village. Investigators alleged that Hoyle had come to Black's home following a dispute with the occupants and opened fire on Black inside the residence. After the shooting, Hoyle fled the scene.
Later that same day, with the assistance of the Montgomery County Police Department, Lauron Zacherie Hoyle was located and arrested at his home in Montgomery Village, just before 3:30 p.m. He was subsequently charged with a host of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and 17 other charges related to assault and firearm offenses. Hoyle was held without bond following his arrest.
