In a tragic turn of events on the evening of February 22, 2017, a dispute in Frederick, Maryland, escalated to violence, claiming the life of 28-year-old Zachary Ryan Winters. That night, police were called to the 400 block of West South Street for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Winters on the floor inside an apartment building, where a witness was attempting to provide aid.
Medics who arrived at the scene were unable to save him and pronounced him deceased.
The incident began when Richard Jerome Harriday, then 62 years old, was reportedly pounding on an apartment door and yelling. Winters, a neighbor, intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and told Harriday to stop harassing his neighbor. An altercation ensued between the two men, during which Winters punched Harriday. Following the physical confrontation, an upset Harriday went to his nearby garage. Witnesses reported hearing the garage door open and close, after which Harriday returned to the apartment building holding a. 38-caliber revolver. He then shot Winters once in the chest.
After the shooting, Harriday fled to a garage near Hoffman's Alley and locked himself inside, leading to a two-hour standoff with police. Police negotiators were able to communicate with Harriday and eventually convinced him to surrender peacefully. He was then taken into custody without further incident. Investigators have stated that they do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence.
Richard Harriday was charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as handgun-related offenses. In February 2018, Harriday, then 63, entered an Alford plea to first-degree murder. By entering this plea, he maintained his innocence but acknowledged that the prosecution had enough evidence to convict him. A judge found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, it was noted that jail calls revealed Harriday showed a lack of remorse for his actions. The courtroom was filled with Winters' family and friends, who remembered him as a 'super guy.'
