In the quiet city of Frederick, Maryland, the life of 63-year-old Michael Roy Bushnell was brought to an abrupt and violent end on September 20, 2026. A dispute with his roommate, 87-year-old Irwin Joseph Dickstein, over an electrical repair in their shared home on Franklin Street is believed to have escalated to a fatal confrontation. Neighbors later recalled hearing the two men arguing before several loud bangs emanated from the residence in the early morning hours.
Bushnell had reportedly confided in a neighbor that Dickstein was upset with him for turning off the power while he was attempting to fix an electrical outlet.
The events following the fatal shooting took a strange turn when Dickstein, rather than fleeing, sought out a pastor at the Frederick Christian Fellowship Church. He confessed to the pastor that he had killed someone, which prompted the pastor to immediately contact the police. A man who had driven Dickstein to the church also informed authorities that Dickstein had admitted to killing his roommate and had placed a handgun case in the trunk of his car. Based on this information, the Frederick Police Department was notified by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Officers were dispatched to the Franklin Street home to conduct a welfare check.
Upon their arrival, police found the residence unsecured and, upon entering, discovered Michael Roy Bushnell's body on the bathroom floor; he had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly identified Dickstein as the suspect and located him at a different location, taking him into custody without incident. Inside the car of the man who drove Dickstein to the church, police recovered a Beretta handgun. Dickstein was subsequently charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder. The case against Irwin Joseph Dickstein was in its preliminary stages following his arrest, with a competency hearing scheduled for October 13, 2026, to determine if he was fit to stand trial.
