In the summer of 2017, a young man's life was cut short on a Sunday evening in Baltimore. Dante Hicks, a 23-year-old Black male, was in the 1200 block of Harwood Avenue on June 25th when he was fatally shot. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Hicks succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with another act of gun violence.
The Baltimore Police Department launched an immediate and intensive investigation into the homicide.
Detectives worked diligently, interviewing several individuals and piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts quickly bore fruit, leading them to a suspect within a matter of days. The investigation, however, did not publicly disclose a motive behind the tragic incident.
Three days after the shooting, on June 28, 2017, authorities apprehended Christopher Beckett, who was also 23 years old at the time. Based on the evidence gathered, Beckett was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Dante Hicks. Following his arrest, Beckett was transported to Central Booking and held without bail as he awaited trial.
