Patty Jane Mayhugh, a 54-year-old female, was a beloved member of the Chickasha, Oklahoma community, known for her vibrant and caring nature. Her life, however, was tragically cut short on a Friday in May 2024, in an event that also claimed the lives of her husband, James Lee Mayhugh, 55, and their 28-year-old daughter, Shayla Lynn Mayhugh. The family was found in their home on South 6th Street after a 911 caller reported seeing shell casings on the front porch. Upon entering the residence, law enforcement discovered a horrific scene. Patty was found deceased near the doorway, while James and Shayla were located in the living room; all three had been fatally shot.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a person of interest: the couple's son, Jacob Mayhugh, then 22. Evidence suggested the act was premeditated, as Jacob had purchased an AR-15 style rifle just weeks before the killings. On the evening of the murders, Patty had sent a text to her son to let him know that a pizza dinner was ready. It is believed the massacre occurred shortly after, as an uneaten pizza was found on the kitchen counter.
Following the discovery of his family, Jacob Mayhugh fled, sparking a multi-day manhunt. He was eventually located and arrested in Oklahoma City's Bricktown district without incident. Authorities found two AR-15 magazines with ammunition in his vehicle at the time of his arrest. After being taken into custody, Jacob confessed to the murders of his parents and sister. Prosecutors also indicated that he had plans to commit additional acts of violence.
To avoid the death penalty, Jacob Mayhugh pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the devastating loss of his family. The community was left to mourn the loss of Patty, James, and Shayla, who were remembered in a joint funeral service.
