In a quiet home in Chickasha, Oklahoma, a promising life was tragically cut short. Shayla Lynn Mayhugh, a 28-year-old female, was found deceased on May 11, 2024, the victim of a violent act that also claimed the lives of her parents, James and Patty Mayhugh. Shayla, born on October 16, 1995, was a graduate of Chickasha High School and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English.
Known for her wit and creativity, she was a writer of songs and poems, and had even received state awards for her work.
The shocking discovery was made after a 911 call reported shell casings on the front porch of the Mayhugh family residence. Upon entering the home, law enforcement found Shayla and her parents, all of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The scene was described as a triple homicide, and an investigation was immediately launched by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. An AR-15 style rifle was recovered from the home.
Suspicion quickly fell upon Shayla's brother, Jacob Mayhugh. Investigators learned that Jacob had recently purchased the firearm found at the scene. He had told his girlfriend he was going to his parents' house for pizza on the evening of May 10th. Evidence at the scene, including an uneaten pizza, suggested the killings occurred that night. After a three-day search, Jacob was located in Oklahoma City's Bricktown district and arrested without incident.
Following his arrest, Jacob Mayhugh confessed to the murders of his sister and parents. Court documents revealed that he had been planning the act and had also expressed intentions to commit further acts of violence. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder. In a move to avoid the death penalty, Jacob Mayhugh pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
