James Edwards, a 29-year-old Black/African American man from New Carrollton, Maryland, was fatally shot on the evening of May 9, 2018. The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. during rush hour on Annapolis Road, on an overpass above the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. When officers from the Prince George's County Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Edwards in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators from the Homicide Unit promptly began an inquiry into the shooting. Preliminarily, detectives stated they did not believe the shooting was a random act, suggesting that Edwards may have been targeted. In the days following his death, the police department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case. As part of their investigation, detectives released surveillance video of a person of interest they wished to speak with in connection with the fatal shooting. The video, recorded approximately 15 minutes after the incident, showed a man walking into a convenience store on South Dakota Avenue in the District of Columbia. Despite the release of this footage and the monetary reward, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made in the case.
