Kenneth A. Brunjes, a 46-year-old male city employee, was one of five Fort Lauderdale beach maintenance workers shot and killed on February 9, 1996, when a disgruntled former coworker opened fire inside a municipal trailer near the beach before taking his own life. According to contemporaneous reporting, the gunman entered the small beach maintenance office at dawn and began shooting, leaving five victims dead at the scene; he then died by suicide, bringing the total fatalities to six.
