In the late evening hours of Wednesday, August 3, 2016, the life of 19-year-old Derryk Johnson was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Northwest Washington, D.C. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 600 block of N Street NW just after 10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were rushed to area hospitals for medical attention.
Derryk Johnson, however, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second victim was reported to be in stable condition. The incident prompted an intense investigation by homicide detectives who canvassed the neighborhood for evidence and witnesses.
The investigation led to the identification and subsequent arrest of three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Marcus Martin, Marc Butler, and William Cunningham Jr. were taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. All three men were held without bail as the case proceeded through the legal system. A trial for the three individuals charged with Johnson's murder was later scheduled.
