Edward Calloway, a 32-year-old man, lost his life in a shooting on December 6, 2018, in the Carrollton Ridge neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. The incident unfolded on the 300 block of South Monroe Street. An obituary for Edward A. Calloway, Sr. states he passed away on December 7, 2018.
The investigation into the death of Mr. Calloway led to the arrest of Terrance Belton. According to court documents, the shooting occurred after Calloway had allegedly assaulted Belton's mother.
This altercation preceded the fatal shooting. Belton's mother was present in the courtroom during his later sentencing in a show of support for her son.
Terrance Belton was initially charged with manslaughter and firearm use in a felony violent crime for the death of Edward Calloway. In 2020, he was found guilty of the handgun charge and of Calloway's murder. However, the Supreme Court of Maryland reversed this decision in 2022. Rather than proceed with a new trial, Belton accepted a plea deal on June 11, 2024. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and firearm use in a felony violent crime.
As a result of the plea agreement, a Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge sentenced Belton to 10 years, with all but three years suspended, for manslaughter. For the firearm charge, he received a sentence of 10 years, with all but five years suspended, to be served without the possibility of parole. The sentences will run consecutively. Belton had been incarcerated since December 20, 2018, and has already served more than five years of his sentence. Upon his release, he will be required to serve three years of probation and undergo screenings for mental health and substance abuse issues, complying with any recommended treatment.
